Digital Citizenship

Ok, so I found a digital citizenship video that I like and I thought it was easy to understand for my second graders, and then I felt old when I recognized some of the devices they were showing hahahahaha!!!!!!

Final Tool # 11

Do I really have to choose only 1 tool ????????? That's too hard. I really like google doc and the possibility of creating documents that we could share with other classrooms. We always use wordle, big huge labs and flipcharts and those are always fun and they support content. My goal for this coming school year is integrate flipcharts more into my language arts block. I'm still working on my google doc for tool 4 and as soon as is ready I will post it in my blog.

My vision hasn't change that much since I really like technology. I guess the importance of digital citizenship and invite the parents into the technology part of the curriculum is something that I never thought but I like the idea.

I cant believe that I left the blog for two years, well, who am I kidding with Vanessa, I actually cant believe I was able to finish this before July 1st :) This is soo much fun!!!!!! I will keep playing with it and will keep posting ;)

Tool # 10

Safety is super important for my students to understand that even though is an awesome incredible word of possibilities with no walls that opens with technology is also very crucial to be cautious. We will have the opportunity to share ideas and information with other classes in the District and hopefully with other classes in other cities. And this will be a wonderful opportunity to talk about internet security. I'm hoping that this coming year the parents will be as receptive as they have been in the past years and they come to library nights and would be able to use the computers and the internet.

I like this idea from the cool cal teacher blog:

Digital citizenship is more than literacy, it is living safely, civilly, and effectively in our increasingly digital world.

The focus here is that students are not where they need to be with the skills encompassed in digital citizenship. It is a process and cannot just be taught by one teacher one time and expect retention.

It must permeate all subjects in all grade levels just like reading, for increasingly it is reading

More about Tool # 9

Now talking about the sites mentioned in tool #9, after the routines are settled I let me students use my computer and the activeboard as part of a center so...

I LOVE TES iboard, I also registered for studyladder, Learning games for kids. I think anything that will give them practice in content will be awesome and they will love it :)

I also like iwebsites: Coin math free, Coin genius lite, ecosystems, everyday math: addition, subtraction, dragon dictation.

Tool # 9

From Tool #9:

This paragraph made me open my san folder :)

Sometimes your center/station may be having students practice a skill on an interactive website. In that case, students aren’t creating a digital product that you can review later. How can you ensure students are engaged during the station? Here are some ideas:

Create an open-ended/close sentences document for students to complete. - I love this idea maybe incorporate this to the sentence starters that we use with Kristie in the dual language centers training that we had. ( my best secret about math is..... or What I learned today about ...... is.......)

Create a Google Doc with links to websites/list of stations for the week. As students move through the stations, they can bold the station they completed that day and write a brief reflection about it. Students could include screen shots of activities.
Have a list of station options and have students sign their name next to what they did. - Even the Wall Wish from Tool #6

Integrating technology into the classroom doesn't happen magically overnight, it requires planning. Take small step. Begin by rewriting a lesson plan to include technology. The good thing about this is that we already use some technology, at least we use the activboard I think 80% of the time in my class. Where are you on the continuum of technology integration?
I looked into the Continuum and I think my classroom Moves from Horizontally: Characteristics of the learning environment: From Collaborative to Active and Vertically: Levels of Technology from Adoption to infusion.

From Love and Logic :) :) :)

Still Thinking about Tool #8

Here is an example of Love and Logic list:
Classroom Expectations (Example #1)

Feel free to do anything that does not cause a problem for anyone else.
I teach when there are no distractions or other problems.
I listen to students who raise their hand.
I listen to one person at a time.
Please treat me with the same respect I treat you.
If someone causes a problem, I will do something.
What I do will depend on what happened and what the person is willing to do to solve the problem.

Tool # 8

1) After watching the videos/tutorials, list two to three things you learned about the device(s) that will be in your classroom this fall.

We enjoyed the Ipod touch and I pads last year a lot. The kids practice a lot of skills with them math more than anything. i think just the technology part is good by itself and then you add content and is a double winning situation. The apps are super kid friendly and some of them are excellent for my Dual language kiddos. The netbooks were excellent for them to practice jiji math, watch brainpop jr, tumblebooks, discovery, etc. Of course, after the second semester last year almost all of them knew the passwords for all the websites.

2) How do you plan to manage the device(s) in your classroom? Do you have ideas/suggestions that others may find useful?

I'm huge on routines and in having classroom jobs, so I will post a technology job to solve problems. I believe that like in everything in a classroom if you establish routines and expectations starting on Meet the teacher, you can give the kids anything you want and they will leave up to your expectations.

LOVE Tool #7

OK, this is my idea for tool #7.

I'm going to create a Google doc for either temperature or to create a story (still debating), I will share it with another second grade teacher in the District, I emailed her but haven't heard from her yet. Then I already talked to my aunt in NYC and my aunt in Venezuela and they are going to put me in contact with second grade teachers in their schools to have them contact me and do the project with my class :)

I can hardly wait, this one is Extremely cool......... I will post the project as soon as I'm done with it for some comments :)

Texas symbols

I love Tool #5!!!!!! In my class we have done Animoto, I already posted the video. We always use wordle at the beginning of a unit to know what we know about it and then at the end and the kiddos love to compare how many more words they learned. We have done jigsaw with the pictures, trading cards and movie posters from the big huge labs. I don't have access to my San folder but I would try to save some of the trading cards during summer camp and I will post them.During my GT training I heard about Prezi and it caught my attention, so I think i will play with that this summer :)

Thoughts about the posts

Well, I think I got behind with the postings. I already got the picasa album did the remix filter and I don't think it would make a difference, really. Found Lots of pictures about Texas symbols and have them ready for that unit :)
I'm currently doing #4, but waiting on my teammates summer emails so that I can send the document, I like that option is like the new template for the roadmap.

Here we go again

Well, I didnt realized that the last time I got in the blog was July 2009. My baby Vanessa, was just born and I was super excited to start the school year as second grade teacher. Two years later, Vanessa will be 2 years old tomorrow june 9th and I will be starting my 3rd year in 2nd grade. I LOVED teaching second grade!!!!. I had the chance to teach two sets of kids that I had in kinder and it was AWESOME. I loved both classes and I will miss them. Now we will have a new team, new kids and a new building. Its going to be an interesting year. I will miss the people that I wont be able to see everyday :(
